Knowing the strings should read C G D A E G is the easy half. Landing each frequency — and knowing whether you are nine cents flat or three — is the half that needs an ear or an instrument.

Every string moves. Work from the low C up; the top G in particular wants a lighter string.

Changing tension on one string shifts the neck slightly. The rest usually need a nudge.

What New Standard is for
Devised for Guitar Craft in the 1980s. The range runs nearly four octaves — wider than standard at both ends — and chord voicings ring unusually open. The outer strings strain a normal set, so dedicated gauges are recommended.
